Asana Practice: Yoga, Core Strength, and Back Health: Keys to Pain-Free Living

 It is well-known that core strengthening is one of the most important ways to keep your back healthy and enjoy pain-free living.
However, when most people hear the term “core strengthening,” they think of strength work for the abdominals, such as crunches, curl-ups, and sit-ups. Unfortunately, these exercises tend to strengthen mainly the superficial muscles on the front of the abdomen, the so-called mirror muscles. In reality, the deeper muscles of the abdominal wall are much more important in supporting the spine and pelvis.
Not only that, but abdominal work is only part of the picture: strengthening only the abdominals can create an imbalance between the abdominal and back muscles that can contribute to back pains and strains.
During this workshop we will explore the keys to strengthening the core in a balanced and holistic way to protect your spine. The focus will be on working with the key muscles of the core cylinder, including the back muscles, while ditching painful sit-ups.
Together we will learn and experience why it’s critical also to strengthen key hip muscles that help align and center your pelvis, which is, after all, the foundation of your spine. These thigh-to-pelvis muscles include the hip abductors and extensors.
During this session, we will practice poses that strengthen all the essential torso and pelvis muscles needed for strong core integrity and keep the spine balanced and healthy. We’ll also include some more complex options for those who are looking for greater challenges.

Asana Practice: Bending Over Backward:  The Why and How of Practicing and Teaching Backbends

Backbends are important. They’re important for opening the front of the body which we close normally. We stretch the intercostal muscles between the ribs and we stretch the front of the diaphragm. Both of this help breathing as we age and as we live this practice. Energetically, backbends squeeze the back kidneys and open the front kidneys and affects somewhat the adrenal glands. Back bends energetically are often suggested for two ends of the spectrum of our emotional state. They can be good for depression. They can also be good for the opposite when we’re very agitated if we do a supported backbend in which the head is lower than the heart. That can be very internalizing and quieting and reduce the Dosha of Vatta.
The more we age, the more backbends we need to do (:
It is all about our intention of doing this pose and not the pose itself.
We all need backbends in our lives.
This workshop will include theoretical studies of anatomy & kinesiology as well as psychological effects back bends create.

In this "Trust Yourself First" weekend you insightfully and professionally built a perfect training program that gave me tools and pointers to finetune my self-practice. My retreat with Vicky was a gift for myself.
Being a working mom with two little kids after covid year felt like the right time for some ME time.. Vicky for me is more than a yoga teacher. She takes you to her own journey, we grow together with our body and mind and practicing with her feels like it's the first time every time. She constantly improving and learning new things and share them with us.
A good outcome for me was to practice yoga as much as I can in this retreat.
But Vicky's way was to leave a mark and bring back to people the magic glimpse of yoga. Let people want to explore their own journey. Yesterday was the yoga international day, I went to a magic place for 108 sun salutation and my friend who were with me in the retreat went to a yoga class after two years she stopped practicing.
