‘What matters in life is not what happens to you but what you remember and how you remember it.
I was thinking a lot about this quote by Gabriel Garcia Marquez while we were in Crete on our family vacation.
Usually, when we go away away with our kids, the first 24 hours could be very exhausting and overwhelming, The opposite of what a vacation should feel like (:
You can imagine my frustration, when, the next day of our arrival, the kids had a big fight and we had to intervene, In case you didn’t know, I am an only child, so siblings’ fights are not my expertise (:
So when they get aggressive, especially on vacations, I get emotional. Deep inside I know I am doing my best with what I have, but still, it triggers me. I am human after all (: This time, I started crying. I shared with them my feelings, my childhood memories, the positive and negative ones, and then we all cried, hugged and made an agreement: that this kind of behaviour is not acceptable and next time they would come to us, the parents, first.
I do hope that this conversation will change their perspective. I know it did for me. I want them to remember me, us, the parents, and their childhood in a positive, warming way.
I know that for many of you, as parents, we don’t get much time for ourselves. We are constantly busy taking care of others. What helps me to go through these challenging moments is a reminder that it is natural to be overwhelmed, tired and wanting to plan a solo, adults only, getaway (:
This is why I love planning and leading retreats so much.
I know that you, like me, crave this time alone, without responsibilities, away from taking care of your home, family members and other chores. Being away, watching the sea, hearing the wind, the waves and the birds is a very powerful healing process.
When we become still and quiet in a safe environment, we open ourselves for possibilities and deep presence that is hard to find in our busy lives.
